Community Action Network Workshop among Hunters and Wildlife Traders on Zoonotic Diseases: Bridging Knowledge and Cultures

The West Africa One Health–IDRC program, in collaboration with the Mitigate Initiative, convened the Community Action Network Workshop for hunters and wildlife traders in Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria, on 2–3 August 2023. The initiative aimed to strengthen awareness of zoonotic diseases among occupational groups working at the human–wildlife interface through structured sensitization sessions, questionnaires, and facilitated discussions assessing existing knowledge and practices.

Veterinary and medical professionals delivered evidence-based education on zoonotic disease transmission and practical prevention strategies tailored to hunting and wildlife trade activities. The workshop adopted a culturally responsive approach, creating space for dialogue and incorporating the Yoruba-language documentary IFURA to contextualize scientific messages within local beliefs and lived experiences.

By the conclusion of the program, participants demonstrated improved understanding of zoonotic risks and the protective measures necessary to safeguard themselves and their communities. The workshop underscores the effectiveness of culturally grounded One Health engagement in promoting behavior change and reducing disease transmission risks among wildlife-dependent populations.
