WAOH Medical Outreach and Anti-Rabies Campaigns in Various States

The WAOH Medical Outreach and Anti-Rabies Campaigns, led by Prof. Cadmus (Principal Investigator), were implemented across multiple states in Nigeria as part of a coordinated effort to reduce rabies transmission and promote both human and animal health. In Ebonyi State, outreach activities were conducted in Izzi LGA on November 2, 2022, and in Isheilu LGA from September 2–9, 2023. These activities combined medical outreach services for humans and animals with anti-rabies vaccination campaigns, particularly strengthening community-based rabies prevention efforts in Isheilu.

In Ogun State, campaigns were held in Ipokia (June 12, 2022), Odeda (April 7, 2023), and Ewekoro (May 11–12, 2023), focusing on anti-rabies vaccination drives, awareness creation, and responsible pet ownership education. A dedicated medical outreach was also conducted in Odeda on November 22, 2023, specifically targeting hunters and game sellers due to their increased exposure risk. In Oyo State, interventions took place in Egbeda LGA (Wakaye community) on June 3, 2023, and in Olodo Odan (UI Veterinary Teaching Hospital) and Ajorosun, Egbeda on September 30, 2023. These campaigns featured comprehensive awareness sessions, community engagement activities, and vaccination services across Ibadan communities.

Additional sensitization programs further strengthened outreach efforts, including the Epe Hunters Sensitization Program on August 2, 2023, and a Hunters Sensitization Program in Abeokuta North on November 2, 2023. Across all states, the integrated approach combining vaccination, public education, and targeted engagement of high-risk groups such as hunters contributed to improved awareness, increased vaccine uptake, and strengthened community participation in rabies prevention and control.
